Moving to the Green Side

William C HuffWe hear a lot about the importance of “Going Green” but it may be more than the environment that we’re protecting. We may also be protecting memories and family histories by reusing furniture, art, glassware and other family heirlooms, which could be considered recycling in its own right.

The Green trend does have a multitude of benefits for business owners such as creating a healthy environment for employees, reducing unnecessary waste and recognizing the role that today’s businesses play in leading the way for social change. There are also many practical advantages such as tax credits and incentives for businesses. Florida,
for example, allows companies that produce and sell electricity from a renewable energy facility to take a corporate income tax credit. Sales tax exemptions for using solar energy systems, equipment, machinery and other renewable energy technologies are also available.

We can all agree that “Going Green” can improve the overall efficiency of a business and in frequent instances — the running of a household/estate. Reducing unnecessary waste can trim operating costs and the simple act of turning off lights in vacant rooms can save energy for both, businesses and homes.

Homeowners can recycle household goods by donating them to charitable thrift stores or donating the more precious objects such as crystal or art to a charity fundraiser/auction. There’re many ways we can start thinking green; it starts with one item at a time. Ask yourself can I repurpose the item; can I give it to someone or to a charity; or can it be recycled?

William C. Huff Companies has been working for the past decade to decrease our carbon footprint. We reuse approximately 300,000 pounds of cardboard boxes each year. The boxes are given to nonprofit organizations and/or clients who are packing themselves. We recycle over 3,000 wooden pallets and 500,000 pounds of corrugated
cardboard/paper materials. Preventing unnecessary landfill helps everyone, our businesses and our communities.

We recently obtained quotes to go solar for our electrical needs and we’ll keep you updated on our progress. What we really want to stress is that everyone can do something; whether protecting your family memories by repurposing an heirloom or recycling — let’s all help preserve the environment for future generations.
