Gulfshore Playhouse, Naples’ premiere professional regional theatre, recently celebrated its 8th annual gala, Bubbles, Baubles and Broadway, with a star-studded evening that raised more than $750,000 for artistic excellence. Entertainment led by Broadway actress Kate Shindle opened the gala with the show-stopping number “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from “Funny Girl.” A sea of crystals, lights and glitter décor, inspired […]

RAREST OF THE RARE

If you’re a regular reader, you’ve come to understand Naples Zoo’s conservation reach from our backyard to Brazil and from Madagascar to Malaysia. As director of conservation, I highlight these field programs to inspire hope for saving animals in nature. But that is far less than half our story. The animal care expertise represented by the biologists, zoologists and veterinary […]

OH! That Opal life – in the facet lane by Diana Jarrett

Are you an opal aficionada (try saying that quickly) like I am? This ancient gemstone has transfixed collectors for centuries. Opal has been discovered in early jewelry and provides us with an insight into its long and beloved history. You have to start that now when we still have roofs covered with tarps and people without homes?” So before we head into the official beginning of hurricane season in June, let’s […]

Crayton Cove

Once again the season has come and gone quickly. Now that we are heading into May, June and July, hopefully, we are taking advantage of the time to enjoy this spot of paradise we live in. May is Naples History month with various events celebrating our history happening throughout the city. June and July tend to be less active months, except […]

Optimism

Are we better off now than we were a decade or century ago? Do we have cause for doom and gloom, or should we be optimistic and celebratory? “Everyone is entitled to one’s own opinion, but not one’s own facts,” Senator Daniel Monahan (R-NY) sagaciously stated, when referencing politics in a different era. But today, […]

Summer Learning

During the school year, children progress along a learning journey and grow in terms of knowledge and skills. However, when summer break comes along, the formal learning process often ends, and a number of students, especially those from lower-income homes, begin to show learning losses. These students often score lower unstandardized tests at the end […]

SAVING YOUR COLOR

Want to save your color this summer? Let’s talk about direct dyes. Direct dyes are easy to use. These dyes can be applied directly from a container onto your hair. They are designed to deposit only, have no ammonia and no activator (developer). They only stain the outer layer of the hair (cuticle) and therefore […]
