The Magic of Summertime at Artis-Naples
Summertime at Artis—Naples means art, music – and summer camps! Summer may feel slower after the hustle and bustle of “season,” but Artis—Naples has plenty of visual and performing arts programming safely on tap to keep the lazy, hazy days humming.
The Baker Museum features several stunning exhibitions on view through July, including Subject Matters: Selections from the Permanent Collection; Magritte: Reflections of Another World/ Paintings from the Van Parys Family; Blurring Boundaries; The Women of American Abstract Artists, 1936-Present; Making a Mark: American Women Artists; Marcus Jansen: Two Decades of Relevance, and in Hayes Hall galleries, Florida Contemporary and Dawn’s Forest: The Sculpture of Louise Nevelson.
Meanwhile, the Hayes Hall stage stays busy, with prize winning violinist Nancy Zhou joining the Naples Philharmonic in a performance of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 on a program that also includes Schubert’s dramatic Symphony No. 6 on May 7 and 8. The Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra takes over on May 12 with All That Jazz, featuring special guest vocalist Denise Donatelli.
May also finds young musicians taking center stage in a series of spring concerts, starting with the Naples Philharmonic Youth Jazz Orchestra on May 16, the Naples Philharmonic Youth Symphonia on May 22, and the Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Wind and Brass, String and Percussion Ensembles on May 23.
And what better way to officially ring in summer than with the Naples Philharmonic Patriotic Pops on May 27 and 28, a rousing star-spangled salute to U.S. troops and the grand music of America. Associate Conductor Radu Paponiu leads the orchestra, joined by guest vocalist Marissa McGowan, in a performance of American music favorites.
And because summer just isn’t the same without camp, Artis—Naples presents the opportunity for kids to explore the arts this summer– safely. With sessions focusing on the visual and performing arts, Artis—Naples Summer Camps offer students a chance to get away from their computer screens and pursue their artistic interests in person.
For students primarily interested in the visual arts, Art Smart Camps are offered for Explorers (students entering grades 2 through 5 in a one-week session from June 14-18, and for Masters (grades 4 through 8) in a two-week session June 21-25 and June 28-July 2.
For young musicians, three options are available to help them fill their summer with the chance to make music together. Music Makers Youth Symphonia Camp invites young string players from ages 10-17 to join in a one-week chamber-music-intensive program from June 14-18, with a free Friday evening concert for the public in Hayes Hall.
Music Makers Youth Chamber Camp offers students ages 12 to 18 an exciting week of chamber music rehearsals, learning and performance led by Associate Conductor Radu Paponiu and members of the Naples Philharmonic. This session takes place from June 21-25, culminating in a performance on June 25.
Music Makers Youth Jazz Camp takes place from June 28-July 2 for jazz students ages 12 to 17, offering them the opportunity to challenge themselves in a fun – yet intensive – week packed with rehearsals, improvisation, master classes and a Friday night performance.
