So you’ve decided to buy a flat iron. Now What?

Which one should you purchase? The right size iron is important. With short hair, thick or fine, an iron with narrow plates is best.

That means look for half an inch or up to an inch iron plates.

For long hair, either thick or thin, use an iron with one and a half to two inch plates.

What is the right material for my iron? Look for irons made with either ceramic, tourmaline or titanium. These materials heat more evenly and help prevent hair damage.

Avoid irons that are coated in ceramic or Teflon, as these irons do not heat evenly.

Irons with negative ions help reduce frizz caused by positive ions. Remember to check the weight. A two-pound iron gets very heavy in a short period of time.

Make certain your new iron has a thermostat. Finer hair requires a lower heat setting. Thicker hair needs a higher heat.

You don’t want to damage your hair!

One more thing….Find a good thermal protectant spray to protect your hair from the iron’s heat.

When ironing, begin with the finer pieces of hair on a lower heat. Raise the heat as you move on to thicker sections of hair. Voila! You are flat ironing your hair just like a pro!

Practice makes perfect.
