Naples Airport Leading the Way in Eco-Friendly Aviation with New Sustainable Fuel Supply

by Chris Rozansky, Executive Director, Naples Airport Authority

The Naples Airport is advancing its commitment to environmental stewardship with the recent addition of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to its fuel offerings. On December 10, 2024, Naples Aviation became the first location in the Avfuel Network to commit to a consistent supply of SAF from a new supply point at Port Everglades. SAF is a groundbreaking alternative to traditional jet fuel, significantly lowering lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The SAF delivered to Naples Aviation is produced using a process which utilizes lipids such as used cooking oil. This method can reduce lifecycle GHG emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.

The airport decided last year to offer UL94 unleaded aviation gasoline (avgas), a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional avgas. The introduction of UL94 was a crucial step in the airport’s ongoing efforts to provide environmentally friendly fuel options to the aviation community. Now, with SAF available, Naples Airport is building on that commitment to sustainability.

Christopher Rozansky, Executive Director of the Naples Airport Authority, remarked: “We’re thrilled to offer SAF to our customers, furthering our commitment to the environment. The addition of SAF, following our introduction of UL94 unleaded avgas, is the latest step in our ongoing dedication to sustainable aviation practices.”

By adding SAF to its fuel offerings, Naples Airport is not only benefiting the local aviation community but also contributing to a larger industry shift. As the first reliable SAF supply point on the East Coast, Naples is playing a key role in making sustainable aviation fuel more accessible across the United States.

“Providing cleaner, alternative fuels is vital for the future of aviation,” said Byron Gray, Senior Director of FBO Services at Naples Aviation. “We’re excited to be a part of this critical movement.” The SAF delivered to Naples Aviation is made possible by a partnership between Avfuel and Valero Marketing and Supply Company. The fuel’s blend offers a sustainable option that reduces GHG emissions while maintaining the same performance as traditional jet fuel.

Naples Airport’s efforts to provide SAF reflect its commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. By continuing to offer cleaner fuel options like UL94 and SAF, the airport is taking proactive steps to ensure a greener future for aviation in Naples and beyond.

As the aviation industry looks for ways to reduce its environmental impact, Naples Airport is leading the way in offering cleaner, more sustainable fuel options that help protect the planet for future generations. With SAF now available, the airport remains at the forefront of this essential movement toward a more sustainable aviation industry.
