The beginning of school in August, beginning of Friday football games, slowly gearing up for season – all make for a lot to do other than watch the weather. I decided years ago that the best way to deal with hurricane season was to have the supplies, like everything you can purchase that is battery operated – fans, radios, TVs, lights, etc. ready to go so that you are not scrambling last minute and can actually enjoy all that our beautiful town has to offer during this time of the year.

SummerJazz on the Gulf season is in full swing during this time – and you can still enjoy two concerts on the lawn of the Naples Beach Hotel. Don’t forget to bring your lawnchair or blanket, be prepared for a beautiful sunset, and enjoy concerts in a very relaxed atmosphere. August 24 – the Vodkanauts will be performing – don’t let the name fool you – this talented five-piece band blends jazz and rockand- roll with time-tested tunes that you will remember and enjoy all over again. The final concert of the season will be on September 21 and features the Betty Fox Band, best known for its blues and funk-infused soul. This group was voted “Best of the Bay” in Tampa. The Naples Beach Hotel is truly one of Naples gems and the owners always provide concerts and activities that are well done and just plain fun.

The von Liebig Art Center will be home for Camera USA, a National Photography Award and Exhibition from August 11 through September 26. Fifty works will be included in the exhibition. Our own Clyde Butcher is one of jurors for this national competition. Take some time to learn more about the von Liebig Art Center, home to the Naples Art Association and enjoy the art of photography. During these months the streets of downtown are a little easier to navigate to take in the Photography exhibit and then stroll down Fifth Avenue – enjoy a dinner of your choosing and make a stop at the Sugden Theatre. From September 24 through October 18 –the production of Noises Off will be featured. This play by Michael Frayn features a dysfunctional troupe of actors and exposes all of their off-stage and onstage antics. In the smaller theatre at the Sugden – the Tobye Studio – October 22 will be the opening of the production of Time Stands Still – the story of a journalist and a photographer who are used to spending their professional lives in deadly war zones – but then have to find purpose in life and enduring relationships.

Thursdays on Third Street continue through these months – and this is a good time to experience all that Third Street has to offer – shops, restaurants, etc.

The Norris Center is also home for some special concerts every Saturday through October 25 – the Naples Jazzmasters Dixieland Jazz group performs from 1-3. This group is an offshoot of the Naples Jazz Orchestra which you can enjoy during season – but don’t forget this special opportunity to continue to enjoy a special form of Jazz – Dixieland through the month of October.

As the end of October approaches I am certain there will be many Halloween events for you and your families to enjoy – so make sure to check them out and have a safe Halloween.

All of these activities are wonderful to enjoy and you are encouraged to enjoy your classical radio station as you drive to them -88.7FM or perhaps you like to take this time to just enjoy a leisurely Sunday afternoon drive around our community – enjoy the beauty accompanied by your classical radio station – 88.7FM.
