Innovative Arts Access Programs at The Naples Players
The Naples Players (TNP) have solidified their reputation as a cultural hub with their groundbreaking Arts Access program, designed to provide opportunities for individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to engage with high-quality theatrical arts experiences. This commitment reflects TNP’s mission to offer “exceptional access to the power of theatre” and has made the organization a leader in inclusive programming.
Tailored, Inclusive Programming
Serving more than 40 partner organizations as well as individual children and adults, TNP’s Arts Access program offers customized classes and resources to meet the unique needs of each participant. This individualized approach ensures that everyone—regardless of ability—can fully experience the transformative benefits of the arts.
The inclusive musical theatre classes at TNP teach skills such as singing, dancing, acting, and teamwork while also fostering confidence, public speaking, and collaboration. Students engage in music theory, vocal warm-ups, rhythm, and pitch under the guidance of skilled instructors like Lauren Turner.
Dance classes focus on coordination, balance, and spatial awareness, while acting classes build communication and self-expression.
Participants show significant growth over the 12-week sessions, performing character lines, songs, and choreographed dance pieces. Many overcome stage fright, build friendships, and take pride in their accomplishments, often practicing outside of class to improve further.
Relaxed Performances and Sensory-Friendly Innovations
TNP has introduced Relaxed Performances, making theatre more accessible for individuals who may find traditional settings intimidating. These performances feature softer sound levels, dimmed lighting, reduced strobe effects, and an accommodating environment where attendees can move freely or talk without fear of judgment.
The Patti Hepburn Sensory Booth in the Kizzie Theater further enhances accessibility. Designed for individuals and families with sensory processing disorders, the booth is wheelchair-accessible and offers adjustable lighting and sound, along with a private entrance and elevator. This space allows patrons to enjoy performances in comfort.
Accessibility Beyond Performances
In addition to its classes and sensory-friendly features, TNP provides a wide range of accessibility resources, including:
- Wheelchair and companion seating in all theaters
- Accessible parking and drop-off options
- Assisted listening devices
- Sign language interpretation*
- Braille and large-print performance guides
- Sensory bags with self-regulation tools
These initiatives underscore TNP’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment for everyone.
Community Centered Development
TNP’s Arts Access programs are developed through close collaboration with the community. By listening to the needs of patrons and partner organizations, TNP continues to expand its offerings to serve individuals of all abilities. This inclusive approach not only teaches performing arts but also empowers participants to build life skills and self-confidence, fostering a stronger sense of belonging.
