Enjoy Everything from Jazz to Opera

MusicFor some the month of March will mark the end of their stay in Paradise; and what a fantastic season it has been to be in Naples, the weather may have been a little chilly at times but face it you did not have to shovel your sidewalk, scrape your car and then hope that it would start. So now it is definitely the time to take advantage of the arts and culture events we have to offer.

Let us look at the month of March by the week and find some interesting places to go and people to see. The first week finds an array of wonderful offerings in the world of classical music and ballet – March 3 – the Moscow Festival Ballet will be performing Don Quixote at Artis-Naples. For our northern friends from Michigan – you won’t have to bundle up to hear the Detroit Symphony – they will be in Hayes Hall on March 4. Finish up the week at the beautiful Trinity by the Cove church in Port Royal for their concert series presentation at 4 p.m. on March 7 – you will hear violinist Jennifer Stumm.

Personally, I am enthused for the week of March 8 – because the variety of offerings that week represents iconic stars and local talent that you don’t want to miss. March 10 – enjoy the wonderful out-of-doors and hear the Naples Jazz Orchestra featuring the works of Woody Hermann – 7 p.m. Cambier Park. Explore a new offering this season that couples the Naples Jazz Orchestra with a meal and opportunity to meet and greet before the concert all at the Naples Art Center – check it out on the Naples Art Association website – www.naplesart.org.

Music 2If you prefer a more classical offering – March 10 finds the phenomenal pianist – Philip Kopachevsky performing with Classic Chamber Concerts at the  Sugden Theatre at 8 p.m. But please do not miss March 14 at 7 p.m. – an opportunity for a preview at the Naples Art Association with Clyde and Niki Butcher.

If you have not seen the fantastic black and white photography of Clyde Butcher you need to make this a must see – he makes the landscape of the Everglades come alive in his works. Even if you are not an outdoor enthusiast – you will feel like you have had an extraordinary experience in our beautiful Everglades through his photography.

The month is only half over and I am sure that you also want to make certain you have time for some St. Patrick’s Day celebrations – so be sure to check out the parade and restaurants featuring wonderful Irish comfort food.

After St. Patrick’s Day celebrations – a couple of interesting choices await you – a classical treat with the return of Christopher Seaman to the Hayes Hall stage. Seaman was the beloved music director of the Naples Philharmonic for many years and he will once again take up the baton on March 20 and 22. So if you remember his wonderful concert preludes – join me at one of these concerts. Classical South Florida 88.7 FM will be the media sponsor for his return and we are proud to welcome him back to Naples.

Be ready to have a whirlwind last week of March – March 23 – at 4 p.m. you can be at the north end of Naples at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church for selections from Mendelssohn’s Elijah or at the south end of Naples at Trinity by the Cove to hear the French Cello – with Phillip Borter, cellist. So these offerings will feed your classical soul- and then on March 24 at 7 p.m. Carmen Bradford – jazz vocalist will present the songs made famous by Ella Fitzgerald with the Naples Jazz Orchestra – 7 p.m. in Cambier Park.

Some very interesting offerings fill the last four days of March – the 29 – Opera Naples presents Rossini’s Barber of Seville at Artis Naples; March 30- the Bach Ensemble presents the Italian Baroque Masterpieces at Grace Lutheran Church in Naples. Then finishing off the month with Dick Hyman presenting the works of Hoagy Carmichael as a part of Life Long Learning at Artis Naples and the final day of March finds the Naples Jazz Orchestra getting your feet tapping and your mind remembering the works of Tommy Dorsey – 7 p.m Cambier Park.

For those of our friends that leave us the end of March – enjoy your Classical Station on line and stream us from wherever your travels take you – for those of you that stay here – continue to enjoy us at 88.7 on your FM dial – until next month continue to enjoy your classical concert hall with no walls – 88.7 FM.
