YOUTH OF THE YEAR CELEBRATION

With NFL Hall of Famer Andre Reed

The Boys & Girls Club of Collier County will celebrate the extraordinary achievements of 20 local Boys & Girls Club members on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at the 5th annual Youth of the Year Celebration.

Musical and dance performances by the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County will open the event showcasing the many talents of the children, which will highlight the Boys & Girls Club of America’s “Year of the Teen” national initiative. Special guest, Andre Reed, NFL Hall of Famer and Boys & Girls Club Alumni, will present the prestigious 2017Youth of the Year Award.

Reed played for 16 NFL seasons, 15 with the Buffalo Bills (1985–1999) and one with the Washington Redskins in 2000 when he retired.In his four Super Bowls, Reed recorded 27 receptions, the second most total career Super Bowl receptions in NFL history. His 323 total Super Bowl receiving yards are the third most in Super Bowl history. A tribute to his incredible physical durability, Reed played in 234 NFL games between 1985 and 2000, the 59th most games played by any player in NFL history.

Andre Reed was inducted into the Boys & Girls Club Hall of Fame during 2015. He is now a success story of attending the Boys & Girls Club and grateful for this honor alongside Denzel Washington, Jennifer Lopez, Magic Johnson and many other successful BGCA Alumni.

The event will be held at Artis–Naples, 5833Pelican Bay Boulevard, at 5:30 p.m. Twenty youth nominees, ages 14 to 18 will be recognized for displaying outstanding leadership, service, academic excellence, moral character and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle during the past year.

Through a presentation of speeches, Youth of the Year candidates will illustrate how they have turned their aspirations into actions and overcome personal obstacles to achieve success. Andre Reed will announce the local 2017 Youth of the Year winner and the recipient will advance to compete on a statewide level for the opportunity to receive up to$50,000 in college scholarships and an induction by the President of the United States.

ABOUT YOUTH OF THE YEAR

Since 1947, Youth of the Year has been Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club teens. Club members who earn the Youth of the Year title embody the values of leadership service; academic excellence; and healthy lifestyles. They exemplify the critical impact that Boys & Girls Clubs have on the lives of young people. Local clubs recognize members ages 14 to 18 as Youth of the Month winners and select a Youth of the Year, who then participates in state competitions. State winners each receive a $5,000 scholarship and advance to regional competitions. Regional winners receive an additional$10,000 college scholarship, renewable for four years up to$40,000. Six youth, including five regional winners and a military winner, advance to the National Youth of the Year competition for a chance at an additional scholarship of $25,000, renewable up to $100,000 for four years. The National Youth of the Year represents all Boys & Girls Club youth.
