The Shortest Month Has Lots of Entertainment Options by Claudia Polzin, Independent Consultant
The month of February is full of many options – from live theatre, to live music in many genres, art galleries, the Botanical Gardens, and the Naples Zoo. Be sure to check out all of the options and plan a fun filled month of activities.
The Naples Players in their 71st season are in a remodeled space and bring exciting theatre to the community. Opening in January was The Play that Goes Wrong – this award winning comedy of catastrophic portions opened in January and, if you missed it, you can still see it through February 16 in the Kizzie Theatre.
While that extraordinary comedy is going on in the Kizzie; in the Price Studio Theatre one of the most iconic dramas of the American theatre is Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. This production will open on February 5 and close on March 2.
If you haven’t ever had a chance to see this play – please don’t miss it. It tells the story of the last days of Willy Loman, a salesman, who cannot understand how he failed to achieve the American Dream. He blindly followed what he thought was important, and he never realized what was important were the people who really loved him.
Naples own equity theatre company – TheatreZone will open on February 6 with Kander and Ebb’s The Rink. When this opened on Broadway in 1984 it was nominated for Five Tony’s. The Rink is one of the collaborations by Kander and Ebb – others include Cabaret, Chicago, and Kiss of the Spider Woman. When The Rink opened on Broadway it featured Liza Minnelli, Jason Alexander and Chita Rivera – what an incredible cast. The heart of the plot is the relationship between a mother, Anna and her estranged daughter, Angel. Anna decided to sell her dilapidated roller skating rink on a decaying boardwalk to a developer. Angel’s return complicates those plans. Flashbacks reveal ancient resentments between mother and daughter.
This production is being presented with the help and blessing of John Kander who helped grant the exclusive rights for this TheatreZone production.
