Science Saturdays – COMPLIMENT NEW YEAR-ROUND HOURS AT ROOKERY BAY ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING CENTER

Science Saturdays, a new education program at Rookery BayEnvironmental Learning Center, provides an opportunity for families to spend the day enjoying programs, labs and activities centered around a different science theme on the last Saturday of every month.

Monthly themes for 2017 are as follows:

  • Aug. 26: Fish
  • Sept. 30: National Estuaries Day
  • Oct. 28: Manatees
  • Nov. 25: Plankton
  • Dec. 30: Marine Debris

Registration is not required. Regular admission fees are $5 for adults, $3 for kids6 to 12 and free for Friends of Rookery Bay members and children under six. Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center’s new hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, all year round. Programs, Tours and Events at Rookery Bay Reserve

August 1 – 3, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Summer Institute for Marine Science

Budding scientists are invited to discover our unique coastal environment with Rookery Bay staff and local researchers! This 3-day pilot program brings students into the field to experience concept in ecology, marine biology, sustainability, and citizen science. Program is designed for students who have completed 7th, 8th or 9th grade with an interest in marine science. Space is limited.

August 12 – 13, 6 p.m. – 8 a.m.

Girls in Science – Slumber at Rookery Bay

Discover the nocturnal side of nature while camping with our Educators inside the Environmental Learning Center! During this special program, your daughter (ages 8 – 14) will learn about species migration. Find out who’s NESTING and who’s RESTING in the Reserve (other areas of Florida as well) throughout the year. We will also take a closer look at the role of weather patterns and how they influence the distribution of plants, animals, sediments, and debris.

August 15, 9 – 10:30 a.m.

Breakfast with the Birds: Stewardship & Citizen Science

Learn about birds at this new summer lecture series! Adam DiNuovo has been working with shorebirds and seabirds across the US and beyond for more than 15 years. He is currently
the Shorebird Stewardship Program Manager for Audubon Florida. Event begins with a light breakfast and mingling. The lecture will be followed by a question & answer session. Cost is $15.

National Honey Bee Day BOGO

In celebration of National Honey Bee Day, the Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center offers “buy one, get one free admission.” Higher price prevails. Cannot be combined with other offers. Must pay at door.

Giants of the Everglades Art Exhibit

Showcasing photography by local artist Dennis Goodman in our art gallery.

September 30, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

National Estuaries Day

This annual celebration recognizes the importance of estuaries, the habitat where rivers meet the sea. Includes staff-narrated boat tours (bus transportation provided to the boat),,introductory 30-minute kayaking trips and stand-up paddleboarding demos on Henderson, Creek, Estuary Encounter interactive marine life exhibit, kids’ games and crafts, behind-the-scenes tours of the science labs, films, food and more. Admission is free and activities are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up begins when doors open at 9 a.m. For those who prefer not to wait in line, VIP passes are available for online purchase.

October 25, 5 – 7 p.m.

Giants of the Everglades Exhibit Opening Reception

Enjoy artwork and refreshments provided by the Friends of Rookery Bay. Cost is $3, or free for Friends of Rookery Bay and the United Arts Council members.

October 28, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
