Parkinson’s Association of Southwest Florida Launches New Rhythm & Motion Class for People Living with Parkinson’s
The Parkinson’s Association of Southwest Florida (PASWFL) is pleased to announce the launch of Rhythm & Motion for Parkinson’s (PD), an exciting new movement class designed specifically for individuals in Southwest Florida living with Parkinson’s disease. The class begins June 16, 2026, and will be held every Tuesday while fostering joy, self-expression, and social engagement. at 10 a.m. in Naples.
Inspired by the internationally recognized Dance for PD® model developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group, Rhythm & Motion for PD combines music, movement creativity, and social connection to help participants improve strength, balance, flexibility, coordination, and confidence.
Research supporting the Dance for PD® model has demonstrated that dance and rhythmic movement can provide meaningful physical, cognitive, and emotional benefits for people with Parkinson’s disease. Studies suggest that participation may improve gait, balance, mobility, posture, motor control, dual-task performance, and overall quality of life. In addition, the use of music and creative expression may help stimulate multiple areas of the brain
Designed for all abilities and stages of Parkinson’s disease, Rhythm & Motion for PD is offered in a welcoming seated format that allows participants to experience the benefits of movement in a safe, supportive environment. Care partners and family members are also encouraged to participate.
“Movement is medicine for people living with Parkinson’s disease,” said Mary Schoeffel, Executive Director of PASWFL

The program is led by Mitzi Montgomery, a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant with more than 25 years of experience working with individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. Montgomery has completed specialized training through the Dance for PD® certification program developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group, a global leader in movement-based programs for people with Parkinson’s.
Combining her extensive rehabilitation background with specialized movement and music training, Montgomery creates classes that are both therapeutic and engaging.
“The goal is to help participants improve strength, balance, coordination, and confidence while creating a fun and uplifting experience,” said Schoeffel. “The class focuses on what people can do, not what they can’t do.”
The class is free for PASWFL members, care partners, and family members. Becoming a member of the PASWFL is free, easy and confidential. Registration is required for this class and participants must register by 4:00 p.m. on the Monday prior to class.
The Rhythm & Motion class is generously sponsored by Fred and Shelly Church.
For almost 30 years, the PASWFL has provided free, high-quality programs and services that educate, enrich, and empower individuals and families touched by Parkinson’s disease and related neurological conditions in Southwest Florida.
