Naples Citizen Police Academy
The Citizens Police Academy at the Naples Police Department offers a unique and engaging opportunity for residents and business owners to step behind the scenes and gain a deeper understanding of local law enforcement.
This interactive program is designed to build stronger connections between the community and the men and women who serve it, while providing valuable insight into the day-to-day operations of the department.
Participants in the Citizens Police Academy will experience a hands-on, informative curriculum that goes far beyond a traditional classroom setting. The program introduces attendees to a wide range of topics, including scenario-based training exercises, traffic enforcement, criminal law, vehicle operations, police communications and dispatch, and forensic investigations.
One of the highlights for many participants is the chance to get behind the wheel of a police vehicle during a controlled driving exercise – an exciting and memorable experience that offers a new perspective on the skills required of officers.
In addition to in-class instruction, qualified participants may take part in patrol and marine ride-alongs, providing a real-world glimpse into the responsibilities and challenges officers face while on duty. These experiences help foster a greater appreciation for the complexity of policing and the commitment required to keep the community safe.
The academy typically meets on Thursday evenings from 6:00pm to 9:00pm in the Naples Police Department training room. While most sessions are held at this location, some classes – such as driving exercises, firearms instruction or demonstrations, and building search training – will take place off-site and may be scheduled on different days. Participants will receive a full schedule upon acceptance into the program.
The Citizens Police Academy is offered free of charge, making it accessible to those interested in learning more about their local police department. Enrollment is limited, and registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to City of Naples residents and business owners. Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received, and selected participants will be notified in November. Applicants must beat least 18 years of age to participate.
Due to the limited class size and the interactive nature of the program, applicants are asked to commit to attending all scheduled sessions. Additionally, because some topics involve sensitive information, all applicants will undergo a criminal background check to determine eligibility.
This information is used solely for the purpose of program participation and is not shared. Participants are also required to submit fingerprints and complete an online Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) training course prior to the start of the academy.
The Citizens Police Academy is more than just a learning experience – it is an opportunity to build relationships, ask questions, and gain a deeper appreciation for the work being done to serve and protect the Naples community.
Applications will open in May and must be submitted online through the Naples Police Department website: https://www.naplesgov.com/police/page/citizens-police-academy.
If you have any questions or issues with the application link, please contact Program Coordinator, Corporal Jeffrey Perry (jperry@naplesgov.com), or Co-Coordinator, Chief of Staff Jennifer Tate (jtate@naplesgov.com).
