Naples Changes People

People come here from all different places, bringing their own stories, experiences, careers, and backgrounds. And somewhere along the way, many of them become part of something bigger than themselves. They become part of a social fabric where giving back isn’t simply encouraged—it becomes part of the culture.
They start asking, How can I help? And that is when you begin to understand the Naples beneath the surface.
I grew up here. I know the history. I know the neighborhoods, the streets, the places that have changed and the places that somehow feel exactly the same.
I have watched Naples grow from the community I knew as a child into the incredible city it is today.
I thought I knew Naples. I knew its history. I knew its beauty.
But this past year, through my work in philanthropy and community engagement with Naples Cancer Advisors, I have come to know something much more important.
I have come to know its people. And in getting to know its people, I feel like I have finally come to understand my city. My hometown. The place I am so proud to call home.
Philanthropy has taught me that giving back is about so much more than writing a check. It is about showing up. It is about time, compassion, relationships, and purpose.
You never really know who you are helping.
It might be the person standing beside you at a food drive. It might be a family quietly going through a difficult season. It might be someone sitting across the room at a gala who has never told anyone what they are facing.
It might be the person whose name you never learn.
Sometimes giving back means filling a box at a food drive. Sometimes it means volunteering your time. Sometimes it means raising your paddle at a gala because you believe in the mission and want to help change someone’s life.
And sometimes, it is simply asking someone, “What can I do?”
I have learned so much about philanthropy over this past year, but perhaps the greatest lesson has been this: Community isn’t something you simply live in. It is something you contribute to.
That is what I believe it means to be a true local. Not simply knowing where everything is but knowing that we have a responsibility to one another.
To show up. To lend a helping hand. To give when we can. To care even when we don’t personally know the person who needs it.
Naples has a remarkable way of bringing people together. Our community is filled with people who have achieved incredible things, but what I find most inspiring is how many choose to use what they have to help others.
That is the part of Naples you don’t always see in a photograph.
It is in the volunteers. The nonprofit leaders. The donors. The small-business owners. The healthcare workers. The parents. The retirees.
The newcomers who have only been here a short time but already feel called to give back. It is in the people who quietly make this community stronger every single day. And perhaps that is why Naples is truly the full package.
Yes, come for the beaches. Come for the restaurants. Come for the sunshine and those sunsets that are like no other.
But stay long enough to experience the people. Because that is where the real magic is.
Naples has changed me, too. It has reminded me that a hometown isn’t defined only by the places you remember or the years you have spent there. It is defined by the people you meet, the lives you touch, and the difference you choose to make.
I am incredibly proud to call Naples home. And after all these years, I thought I knew my city. Now I realize I was only beginning to understand it. Because I know the people. And now, I truly understand the heart of Naples.
A community filled with empathy. A community filled with purpose. A community filled with helping hands. A community that gives. And a community that, in so many ways, changes you.
That is Naples. And I am blessed to call it home.
