March is Red Cross Month!

March is American Red Cross Month, a special time to recognize and thank Red Cross volunteers and donors who give their time, and to inspire others to become heroes in their communities.

All over the country and around the world, the Red Cross is powered by volunteers who respond to catastrophes ranging from home fires to natural disasters, delivering help and hope to those affected. Ninety percent of the Red Cross workforce is comprised of volunteers. The need to help people is constant—and this past year of disaster activity was no exception.

In 2019, Red Cross volunteers stood by the sides of families affected by large events like wildfires in California, Hurricane Dorian on the East Coast, tropical storm flooding in Texas, and tornadoes and floods in the Midwest. Locally, the South Florida Red Cross deployed nearly 200 volunteers to respond to major disasters such as Hurricanes Barry and Dorian, the floods in the Midwest and the shooting in Dayton, Ohio. Their work didn’t stop there! Red Cross volunteers across the South Florida Region also responded to more than 550 home fires and provided comfort and support to over 2,400 individuals.

Undertaking disaster relief efforts would not be possible without the support of trained Red Cross volunteers, generous and
