Enjoying Life in Southwest Florida by Claudia Polzin Independent Consultant

Unlike the rest of the country as autumn approaches, weather in Naples is still summer so we usually plan to find more indoor activities. Very lucky for us we do have several options to select from. Thinking about our many selections of Big Band concerts – beginning in August the Naples Jazzmasters will have concerts at The Norris Community Center on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th flowing right into their September dates of 2nd, 23rd and 30th. All concerts begin at 1pm and are free, donations though are greatly appreciated. The Cambier Park Bandshell will see Season’s first outdoor concert on October 15th when the Naples Concert Band takes the stage at 2pm. Remember for this concert to bring lawn chairs. These are good days to pair a dinner or lunch downtown with an enjoyable concert.

Another indoor option – Historic Palm Cottage – open Tuesday through Saturday from 12 – 4pm. This beautiful historic cottage holds many treasures and insights into the rich history  of Naples and Collier County – so don’t miss it. Every Saturday in August Collier County residents can tour the cottage for free. On September 2nd in honor of Labor Day September 4th, there is a special opportunity for tours – a BOGO (so not only do the grocery stores offer you BOGO for Labor Day but so does Palm Cottage).

Even though The Naples Players are not going to be in their usual home – the Sugden theatre – they have a full schedule planned. In August you can enjoy the KidzAct production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It will be presented August 4-6 at The Community School home to TheatreZone. The musical will offer shows at both 2pm and 8pm. October brings for the adults The Dining Room with performances the 4th – 22nd in McSpadden Hall at Naples United Church of Christ. This comedy of manners has 18 different households portrayed in scenes over the decades all set in a dining room.

TheatreZone will open their 19th season with a collaboration with FGCU’s Bower School of Music. The production is Heathers: The Musical. This is a teen comedy that looks at the joys and agony of a high school where the original mean girls rule. Performances will be held October 12th-15th at 2pm and 7:30pm in the FGCU Theatre Lab.

Enjoy our wonderful city as we get ready to launch into season and all that it has to offer our residents and guests.
