BREAKING THE CYCLE: OVERCOMING ALCOHOL CHALLENGES IN COLLIER COUNTY

In Collier County, social drinking is deeply embedded in our culture. It can be a way of celebration or solace. However, for an increasing number of people, the prevalent social drinking scene in our community either leads to or exacerbates personal struggles with substance use.

This challenge is becoming more evident among our older residents, who moved here to retire in what feels like a perpetual vacation but now face difficulties due to unhealthy habits.

According to the 2024 Senior Report from America’s Health Rankings, over 9% of senior citizens in Florida are classified as excessive drinkers, compared to 7.7% nationwide. Excessive drinking is defined as consuming more than four drinks in a day or over eight drinks per week for women, and more than five drinks in a day or over 15 drinks per week for men.

At the David Lawrence Centers for Behavioral Health (DLC), we have witnessed a rise in individuals seeking treatment or support services for alcohol misuse. In the fiscal year 2024, we assisted over 1,600 individuals, including many seniors, through various recovery-focused programs. This marks an increase from the 1,455 individuals served the previous year.

The reliance on alcohol brings about numerous detrimental health effects, particularly for our elderly population, who are already vulnerable to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.
