THE BRUCE & CYNTHIA SHERMAN Palm Beach Vision Health Initiative

Kids go to school with backpacks full of textbooks, notebooks, and pencils, but many lack an essential element for academic success: annual vision care.

As the Grand Gala Patrons for Bascom Palmer Eye Institute’s 2021 “You & Eye” Virtual Gala, Bruce and Cynthia Sherman have partnered with Bascom Palmer to establish The Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Palm Beach Vision Health Initiative, a vision screening program for pediatric underserved patient communities in Palm Beach County.

“One third of the information coming into a child’s brain comes through their eyes,” said Eduardo C. Alfonso, M.D., Direct and Chairman of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. “It is very important that we intervene early in a child’s life and do vision screenings. If we do so, we can make a child’s life that much better.

Bascom Palmer is proud to be providers of eye care for the children in Palm Beach County.

”The $500,000 gift from the Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Charitable Foundation to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine will provide screenings, glasses and sports goggles, underwrite surgery when needed, and ensure chronic care is provided for pediatric patients (aged 0-18) who require it.

“As a former kindergarten teacher, I’ve seen the importance of sight in igniting a child’s spark of curiosity and pursuit of knowledge, said Cynthia Sherman. “That’s why Bruce and I are thrilled to support the critically important mission of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, helping more children protect and preserve their sight for a lifetime of learning.”

The new and very impactful Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Palm Beach Vision Health Initiative will launch in the Summer of 2021, and will bring life-changing vision care to thousands of underprivileged and at-risk children in Palm Beach County.

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute serves as the Department of Ophthalmology for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Bascom Palmer’s mission is to lessen the burden of blinding diseases by offering compassionate clinical care to patients, conducting forward thinking research and training the ophthalmologists of the future.

For the 18th consecutive year, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is ranked the nation’s best eye hospital by U.S. News & World Report.

In addition to its international reputation as one of the premier providers of eye care in the world, Bascom Palmer is the largest ophthalmic care, research and educational facility in the southeastern United States.
