Popular gemologist-journalist earns Top Ten spot in 2017 national competition

(NEW YORK) – American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS) has announced the results of their annual Bulletin Editors Contest. Prolific journalist Diana Jarrett ranked in the Top Ten leaderboard among a hoard of North American entries from 7 participating regional federations. Jarrett’s winning entry was submitted by Mitchell Portnoy, president of the New York Mineralogical Club.

The NYMC is an historically important association formed in 1886 by George Frederick Kunz and other gemological forerunners. Jarrett has been an avid member of the venerable mineralogical club for well over a decade and a regular contributor to The Bulletin of The New York Mineralogical Club.

The stringent judging that takes place from the local to regional and finally to the national level confirms the quality of participant writers to this anticipated annual occurrence.

With a wide and diverse array of categories in the juried event, contributors fill slots of Poetry, Large & Small Bulletins, New Editors, Special Publications, and more. “The bulletin editors contest is one of the key resources that we have to improve and encourage editors and talented members to build their clubs,” reports Ed Nelson, chairman of the Bulletin Editors’ Advisory Committee for the AFMS.

This year’s winning feature by Diana Jarrett was Heaven of Earth; Uncovering the Kashmiri Mystique. In it, Jarrett explores the qualities that set Kashmir sapphire apart from that found in other locales, and examines the historical significance of the Kashmir region in the Himalayas. Mark Nelson, AFMS BEAC Committee Chair lauded Jarrett’s achievements by saying, “Your entry in the contest was judged to be one of the Top Ten in North America.”

Diana Jarrett’s gemological and jewelry related articles appear in a wide range of trade and consumer publications today. Learn more about her work and contact her at www.dianajarrett.com.
