GREEN IS THE COLOR OF MARCH

Advertorial

We think of St. Patrick’s Day as being our green connection to March, but we want to add a green building element in our story this month.

St. Patrick’s Day occurs annually on March 17 in observance of the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. What began as a religious feast in the 17th century has evolved into a variety of festivals across the globe celebrating Irish culture with parades, food, music, dancing, and a whole lot of green. It’s the day that we all wear green whether we are Irish or not.

Let your house go ‘green’ all year long with energy saving products and building materials. By using green building materials, owners are helping reduce negative impacts on the environment. A reduction in construction materials and a more efficient use of energy helps contribute less greenhouse gas emissions.

In our design stage, KGT tries to suggest products and materials that are energy efficient. In one of our recent home remodels, we used LED recess lighting that was generously installed throughout the kitchen, as well as LED puck lighting in their upper wall cabinets with LED tape lighting under the cabinets. This made for a bright energy efficient kitchen.

LED lights are up to 80 percent more efficient than traditional lighting such as fluorescent and incandescent lights. Ninety-five percent of the energy in LEDs is converted into light and only five percent is wasted as heat. This is compared to fluorescent lights that convert 95 percent of energy to heat and only five percent into light.

When adding wood elements, there are many options. An island is a good location to include are cycled butcher block. Bamboo’s best green feature is that it’s a rapidly renewable resource, plus it’s naturally stronger and harder than most other hardwoods. Glass is another great choice, as recycled glass countertops vary greatly in appearance and make a statement.

Many green materials are available and can be discussed during the home remodel design stage. Stainless steel is yet another great choice as it is made of 60 percent recycled content and, because it can be recycled again and again, has an extended useful life. This product offers durability for a long life.

Concrete countertops can also be a terrific green choice; it’s trendy and modern. KGT Remodeling is a design build company that has won eight awards for our outstanding work and craftsmanship.
