A Pagliacci Gala Promises an Unforgettable Evening of Opera, Illusion and Celebration
On December 10, Opera Naples will invite Southwest Florida to step into a world where opera, circus and illusion collide at “Circus of Illusions: A Pagliacci Gala,” the company’s signature annual fundraising event at a premier private club in Naples. Led by Gala Chairs Connie Leon and David Houghton (FEATURED PHOTO), the extraordinary evening promises to be as dramatic, dazzling and unexpected as the opera that inspired it.
Beginning at 6 pm, guests will be transported into the theatrical world of Ruggero Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci, the gripping masterpiece of passion, jealousy and betrayal that will headline Opera Naples’ upcoming Festival Under the Stars. The gala will offer an exclusive preview of the production, featuring principal singers from the upcoming I Pagliacci, giving guests an opportunity to experience the power of these exceptional artists before the opera takes the stage in March.
But the drama begins well before the first note.
During the cocktail hour, the Southwest Florida Circus Company will bring the spirit of the circus to life with special entertainment designed to immerse guests in the gala’s “Circus of Illusions” theme. As guests mingle and enjoy cocktails, the evening will unfold with a sense of spectacle and surprise—an ideal introduction to an event inspired by one of opera’s most theatrical works.
The celebration also includes an elegant dinner as well as live and silent auctions offering an array of distinctive experiences and treasures. For Opera Naples supporters, the auctions are more than an opportunity to take home something extraordinary; they are also a meaningful way to invest in the future of opera and arts education in Southwest Florida.
The evening will culminate with dancing and live entertainment by The Brett Foreman Band, giving guests the chance to celebrate late into the evening.
At the heart of the gala, however, is a purpose that extends far beyond one spectacular night. Guests will be treated to a special performance by the Opera Naples Youth Company, offering a glimpse of the next generation of artists whose talents this evening helps cultivate.
Proceeds from the event help Opera Naples fulfills its mission of presenting high-quality opera and musical performances while expanding access to arts education and community engagement. Opera Naples’ educational programs reach more than 4,000 students and seniors each year, introducing audiences throughout Southwest Florida to the transformative power of music and live performance. Support from the gala also helps sustain programs including the Opera Naples Youth Company, Summer Youth Program, Resident Artists Program and the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation Opera Naples International Voice Competition.
The gala arrives at an exciting moment for Opera Naples. The company’s 2026/27 season represents one of its most ambitious seasons yet, featuring eight opera titles across five productions, along with concerts, ballet and the seventh annual Festival Under the Stars. The season will span centuries and styles—from Henry Purcell and George Frideric Handel to Gioachino Rossini and Ruggero Leoncavallo to Leonard Bernstein and Gian Carlo Menotti—and will showcase exceptional emerging singers, including winners of the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation Opera Naples International Voice Competition.
And fittingly, the gala’s centerpiece, I Pagliacci, will return as part of the Festival Under the Stars in March 2027. With its unforgettable music and dramatic story of performers whose lives become dangerously intertwined with their roles onstage, I Pagliacci embodies the very idea behind an evening called “Circus of Illusions”—where the boundaries between spectacle and reality become beautifully blurred.
For opera lovers, philanthropists and anyone looking for a truly memorable Naple’s experience, “Circus of Illusions: A Pagliacci Gala” offers an evening unlike any other.
From circus artistry and cocktails to world-class opera, fine dining, auctions and dancing, every element has been designed to entertain while supporting a vital cultural institution.’
On December 10, the curtain rises on an unforgettable celebration. Come for the spectacle. Stay for the music. And help Opera Naples ensure that the arts continue to inspire Southwest Florida for
generations to come.
