A Meal That Says, “You Matter”
By Rabbi Fishel Zaklos
The kitchen was alive and bustling. Nearly 60 volunteers stood side by side at Chabad of Naples Kitchen of Kindness cooking, packing, and preparing 150 fresh, kosher meals for neighbors throughout our community. There was laughter and conversation, but also a shared sense of purpose. Every container would soon reach a neighbor who needed more than dinner.
Kitchen of Kindness is a monthly initiative that brings people together to prepare and deliver homemade meals to anyone who could use comfort, care, and support. Some recipients are seniors. Others may be living alone, recovering from illness, or moving through a difficult time. The meal meets a practical need, yet it also carries a deeply personal message: You matter. You are remembered. You are not alone.
What moved me most was watching the volunteers. People chopped, packed, labeled, organized, and helped wherever they were needed. No special experience was required. Just a willingness to show up and do something good for someone else. By the time the meals were ready, those simple ingredients had transformed from food to expressions of care.
I had the privilege of helping with deliveries myself. At the doors, I saw smiles that told the rest of the story. Recipients shared how much the hot meal meant to them and how cared for it made them feel. We arrived carrying food, but what they received was also connection, dignity, and the uplifting knowledge that someone in Naples was thinking of them.
The kindness traveled in both directions. Those receiving the meals felt supported, while those who prepared them left inspired by the experience of doing something real for a neighbor. That is the beauty of Kitchen of Kindness. It nourishes the person receiving the meal, the person preparing it, and the bonds that hold a community together.
Its reach is already growing. Local agencies have approached Chabad of Naples to ask whether Kitchen of Kindness could assist people they serve, and we have been grateful to help. Each partnership gives us another opportunity to reach someone who could benefit from a warm meal and thoughtful support.
There is room in this kitchen for everyone. Volunteers can cook, pack, label, organize, or help deliver. Families can participate together. Others can sponsor meals, make a donation, or privately refer a friend, neighbor, or loved one who could use a little care. Every role matters because every meal begins with someone choosing to help.
Kindness does not always arrive through a grand gesture. Sometimes it comes in a carefully packed container, carried to the door by a neighbor. Sometimes hope looks like a hot meal and the smile that comes with it.
