John Charles “Chick” Heithaus

Naples, FL

John Charles “Chick” Heithaus, 74, Naples, died Thursday, October 19, 2017 in Hanstedt, Germany, during a visit with longtime friends.

Chick handled marketing, and later, international foodservice equipment business, for Hobart Corp, Troy, OH; Lincoln Manufacturing, Fort Wayne, IN; and Grindmaster Corp, Louisville, KY. But he most relished his work with children in the Guardian ad Litem program in Florida’s 21st District Court and his campaign for cultural opportunities in a growing East Naples with the Cultural and Performing Arts Center group (CAPA).

His awards were numerous, from the National Association of Foodservice Equipment Manufacturers national Sparkplug to the 2017 Guardian ad Litem of the Year. He served enthusiastically as president of Score in Collier County and as a precinct deputy for the Collier County Board of Elections, believing strongly in everyone’s right to vote.  One of his favorite weekly activities was taking his dog, Izzy, as a therapy dog to Lely Manor Care for visits with its patients.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet; his daughter, Kathryn Hurt; and three grandsons, Charles, Clement and John Hurt; as well as four brothers and sisters, Ray, of Gambier, OH; Betsi Heithaus and Dian Wray, Cincinnati, OH; and Ken, Uruguay. He also considered in his extended family the young people who came to the Heithaus household to stay as foreign students or career interns: Tracy Miguel, Julian Messerschmidt, Hendrik Jeusten, Kerstin Ernst and Frank Bydalek.

Burial will be in Troy, OH.  Memorial reception is planned for3:00-5:30 p.m., Saturday, November 4th, at the Wang Opera Center, 2408 Linwood Ave, Naples.  Musical interlude at 4:30 p.m., followed by tributes from those who wish to add them.
