Triumph 2017: The Freedom Writers Story

Please join us for a special evening highlighting the life-changing

power education can provide to children of all backgrounds. Our

guest speaker is Erin Gruwell, the inspiring teacher and author
profiled in the 2007 movie Freedom Writers, starring Hilary Swank.

Ms. Gruwell utilized books like Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl to unite a diverse class of 150
at-risk students. All graduated from high school, with many going on to college. These
students became known as "The Freedom Writers" - a take-off on the 1960s civil rights
activists the “Freedom Riders”. Together they authored The Freedom Writers Diary, a

compilation of the inspiring journals they wrote in her class.
