                                                             24 | JUAN DIAZ

It only takes a brief chat with Juan to understand that the joy
he feels in life is reflected in his art. Juan’s art is vibrant, bold,
stimulating and exciting, a contrast to his quiet reserved manner.
Born in Bogota, Colombia, his father was also an accomplished
artist who recognized talent in Juan prior to the age of five.

                                     28 | NAPLES ZOO

Summer Camp WILD is in full swing at Naples Zoo! Camp
WILD gives children an opportunity to connect with wildlife and
nature. They’ll learn about animals from around the world, careers
working with animals, what animals build, and why animals act a
certain way. Children can also learn about steps they can take now
to help save animals and the environment.

                                                            56 | NAPLES BOTANICAL GARDENS

It all started in 1993, when Dr. Everett Alsbrook and Dr.
Robert Reed questioned why a collection of local palms should
be shipped to Fairchild Gardens in Miami. Why not keep them
here? A clutch of plant lovers agreed, and an organization was
formed. “This was a real dirt-under-the-fingernails bunch, people
who just loved gardening,” recalls Catherine Ware, a long-time
                                                            board member.
