IRF4 and Gray Hair
Iby Erick Carter
RF4 (interferon regulatory factor 4 gene) plays a role in hair color, but now it’s linked
to gray hair. A team lead by Professor Andres Ruiz-Linares of the University College,
London has connected the IRF4 gene to gray hair.
“IRF4 is involved in regulating production and storage of melanin, the pigment that

determines hair, skin, and eye color,” the scientists said.
It’s well known that the cause of gray hair is, absence

of melanin. Knowing that IRF4 regulates the
production of melanin, it may lead to a new way
of covering gray or perhaps slowing down the
process. But don’t get over excited, it’s still
in the infant stage and there is much more
work to be done. So don’t cancel your color
                           appointment.
