The Future of AI in Medicine

Dr Ranya G. Habash MD

Dr. Ranya Habash, Chief Innovation and Technology Officer at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, is leading a new partnership with Microsoft that uses artificial intelligence to help diagnose and treat conditions including glaucoma, myopia, macular degeneration and Alzheimer’s disease.

Over the past two years Dr. Habash and her team have worked with Microsoft to create a platform for analyzing vast amounts of data in a fraction of the time it would take a human being. This allows them to generate algorithms to answer some of the biggest questions plaguing ophthalmology today; these answers can help prevent blindness around the world.

The goal of Bascom Palmer’s partnership with Microsoft is to analyze patients in real time. Imagine a doctor has a patient with glaucoma sitting in front of them. Instead of guessing whether or not to treat him or her or what the target IOP should be, the computer analyzes the patient’s age, race, family history, IOP, pachymetry, visual fields, and OCT scans to determine the real risk of progression over time.

Additionally, the algorithm helps to determine how many medications the patient should be taking, what the target IOP should be or when a surgical procedure is indicated.

The computer will be able to provide all of this information in real time, within seconds, while the patient is in the exam chair.

Artificial Intelligence is not going to replace physicians, but it will allow them to take a highly personalized and efficient approach to medicine. That time then saved can be spent counseling patients and truly practicing medicine.

Artificial Intelligence is a very valuable tool for us to have in our armamentarium, and its potential will only continue to grow.
